Why corals?
Coral reefs are the second lunge of our planet, more than 25% of marine biodiversity directly depends on it.
However, coral reefs require immediate action:
50% have already been lost in the past 30 years (UNEP)
90% are threatened by 2050 (IPCC)
Your GOT BAG X CORAL GARDENERS ROLLTOP supports the 2022 reforestation program of our partner Coral Gardeners.
Adjustable & durable – The all-rounder for adventure seekers & freedom lovers. ProtectsAvailable 07/17/22 04:00 (EDT) your essentials from wind and weather and expands easily thanks to the flexible rolltop and adjustable side straps. It protects your laptop from scratches with a separate, removable 15-inch case.
For each ROLLTOP we recover 7.7 lbs of Ocean Impact Plastic.
Symbolically, our products stand for clean oceans and a responsible use of plastic. That's why we not only collect the Ocean Impact Plastic that we recycle for the production of our travel and everyday companions, but also ensure that the plastics that cannot be used are recycled appropriately. Together with our customers, we ensure that they never end up in the ocean again, rethink circular economy and actively fight for the conservation of our environment. With the goal of a circular economy, our backpacks are made of mostly recycled materials and are particularly durable. They consciously forgo the need for constant new collection cycles and pursue a timeless, minimalist design language. In addition to our two-year warranty, we offer you a spare parts service. We also take back GOT BAGs and replace them if the functionality is no longer guaranteed. For some cases we are already testing a sewing service and expect to be able to offer a welding service in the near future. In this way, we want to guarantee each GOT BAG the longest possible life. We want to create greater awareness - both through our clean-up program and our work with local authorities in Indonesia, but also by raising people's awareness of plastic recycling worldwide. We encourage people to think, to question their own actions, and to work together to effect change. Create an Impact.
With the GOT BAG clean-up program off the North coast of Java, Indonesia, more than 2,000 local participants collect plastic from coastal waters, mangrove forests and the delta region of the nearby rivers. The Ocean Impact Plastic collected in the process is therefore no longer posing a threat to the oceans. The PET portion of the Ocean Impact Plastic is cleaned, sorted and pressed into pellets – it makes up the raw material of GOT BAG products. The other types of plastic that cannot be recycled to date are fed into suitable recycling solutions. The pellets are shipped to China for production, where they are processed into robust yarn for your GOT BAG.
The total amount of Ocean Impact Plastic we have collected so far is on display through a live tracker on our website. We have been documenting the performance of our clean-up program in Indonesia together with the Berlin-based start-up "Cleanhub" in order to transparently disclose the amount of plastic collected as well as its composition and to be able to report its exact origin.
So far, we can only use the PET part of the collected Ocean Impact Plastic for the production of your GOT BAG. Of course, the other types of plastic do not end up back in the ocean: With our own Clean-up program in Indonesia, we ensure that all plastic recovered is fed into suitable recycling solutions. In addition, we are constantly working with our research partners to be able to independently process more and more of it into new products in the future.
Since all our products are made from recycled materials, there can always be small variations in structure and color. This is not proof of a lack of quality, but merely the result that we actually use recycled, independently collected Ocean Impact Plastic for production. Still, the ambition obviously is to produce a flawless product, and we are working diligently to fix any minor flaws affecting the material's structure. However, irregularities can be smoothed out at home with a damp microfiber cloth.
The pellets made from Ocean Impact Plastic are transported by ship from Indonesia to China for further processing. Locally, we still rely on road transport, but we are also looking for more environmentally friendly alternatives. The finished goods are transported from China to Germany and the USA by ship. There, the products are shipped in reusable and recyclable packaging made of recycled materials.
Coral Gardeners was founded in Mo’orea, the sister island of Tahiti, in French Polynesia.
In 2017, a small group of island kids witnessed the rapid degradation of their local reef and decided to act. They have grown into an international collective of advocates, scientists, engineers and creators determined to revolutionize ocean conservation. Since 2017, the team has expanded to more than 20 members, with a global movement of half a million people all committing to save the reefs. To date, Coral Gardeners has been able to plant over 15,700 corals around the island.
By purchasing a product of our COLLAB EDITION, you will automatically adopt a coral - a POCILLOPORA VERRUCOSA, which is one of the most iconic corals in Mo’orea’s reef.
The Coral Gardeners have a specific method to grow and revive corals using resistant corals that will grow on a rope attached to a nursery table. Those corals “have proven to resist and survive extreme water temperatures and bleaching events.” The CG restoration team identified the resistant corals in the lagoon around their island during the last bleaching event. They can fragment about 10% of them to put on ropes. With your purchase, you will adopt a part of this coral, which will grow out on ropes until it is large enough to be transplanted onto the reef (this can take up to 1 ½ years). To fix the corals onto the reef, the team uses a mixture of marine cement and freshwater. The corals can grow over their cemented attachment point and fuse with the reef, hence reviving it. Throughout the process, you will be provided with updates.
GOT BAG is partnering with French Polynesia based Coral Gardeners to create an even bigger impact. After collaborating for three years (the first was a coral planting promotion for Black Friday 2019), the two teams felt like manifesting their common spirit with a COLLAB EDITION of GOT BAGs showcasing the iconic Coral Gardeners logo. The collection consists of three pieces: ROLLTOP, ROLLTOP LITE and HIP BAG.
Corals are the "rainforest" of the oceans. The second lung of our planet, on which more than 25% of marine species directly depend. However, coral reefs are dying at an alarming rate - as much as 50% have already been lost in the past 30 years (UNEP). The decline could reach up to 90% by 2050 if global warming is limited to an increase of 1.5°C, according to the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report.
For ocean dwellers and non-ocean dwellers. We’re closing the gap between style & sustainability, by crafting sleek & minimalistic products, that are made from up to 9.9 lbs of Ocean Impact Plastic! Loved by VOGUE & Forbes for a reason!
Activating the communities that spend most of their time on the water, we created a network of over 2,000 Indonesian fishermen to recover the ocean plastics they pull in with their nets. By-catch that isn’t edible, but recyclable. In addition to the plastic we collect directly from the ocean, we now collect plastic from coastal areas and prevent it from entering the ocean in the first place.
Made from the most durable lightweight engineered materials! All of our products are waterproof thanks to our innovative PU or TPU coating! The perfect products for whatever life throws!
